Of course, for everything to go smoothly, the size of your new HDD or SSD must be equal to or greater than that of your old device. Indeed, if you want to copy data from an 80 GB storage device to another one of 50 GB, for example, the operation will be impossible.

- Select the device to copy (source): after launching the cloning software, you’ll need to choose the source device and click the ‘clone’ tab in your utility.
- Choose the destination device: this is where you select the device you want to back up to. If needed, and depending on the cloning software chosen, your second device may be formatted if this hasn’t already been done.
- Start the cloning process: you’re ready to perform the cloning. Once the operation is complete, you can access the backup hard drive directly.
You can then check that the operation went well by restarting your PC from the cloned device. Next, go to the BIOS settings and start the machine from the copied device.
Cloning a hard drive without third-party software
It’s also possible to copy the files from your storage device to another one, without using cloning software. How? By using the system image utility if you’re on Windows. However, this tool functions more as a drive backup than a true cloning feature. This simply means it’s designed to save and then restore files/data on the same computer, and not on another device.
