What our clients say

“A million thanks to the @chronodisk_fr crew for saving more than 60 000 tracks for me. This is 6 years of music!!! I would have been gutted to lose all that- You guys are wizards, and deserve a super huge MERCIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII #chronodisk #thankyou #savingData #bestintheworld

Our advice to avoid making
data loss worse
Stay optimistic, and above all don’t take any risks!
Hardware faults
Switch off the device immediately, especially if you hear unusual noises.
Do not force the drive with tools that don’t handle bad sectors, as this could scratch the platters.
Never open the drive outside a cleanroom. This will leave traces, and laboratories charge extra for the time needed to clean the platters.
Pack your hard drive carefully when shipping it
Non-hardware faults
You can no longer access your data.
Above all, do not write anything else to the drive: do not install software or, worse, copy data onto the drive that suffered the loss.
If you need to work on the computer, clone it onto an identical drive and then work from an external enclosure.
Water and fire damage
Cleaning is delicate! Do not dry out the drives.
For drives that have been submerged: it’s best to leave them in water to prevent corrosion — ideally in a sealed plastic container filled with distilled water.
Stay calm — we’ve already received dozens of these 🙂
Frequently asked questions
SSD drives are widely used to store important information. Besides being lightweight, they are prized for being compact with ample storage space. It’s a reliable, fast, durable and efficient piece of equipment. However, it is not immune to malware and accidents, and in the event of an attack or malfunction, you are likely to lose all the files stored on it. How should you react when this happens? Call on Chronodisk for SSD data recovery!
Why you risk losing data on an SSD drive
Unlike magnetic hard drives, SSD models are more robust. Stored data is held in what’s known as flash memory. The risk of losing it to a mechanical fault is therefore almost non-existent.
Even if your media is dropped or knocked, your files remain intact. Loss on this type of device occurs when the data and flash memory are damaged. The most common failures generally fall into these categories:
- Virus attack: SSD devices are not immune to viruses. When malware gets onto the drive, it attaches itself to documents and infects them. Without antivirus software installed, malware corrupts the system and makes your information inaccessible and unreadable. In this case, you may need to wipe the memory to get a freshly formatted system.
- Operating system crash: the device’s operating system generally crashes because of a software malfunction.
- The media has burnt out: the cause? Power surges!
- A deliberate or accidental format: an SSD device may be formatted because it’s infected with viruses, because its file system isn’t recognised, or when you install a new operating system. Either way, this erases the information on the drive.
- Electronic components have failed
- The circuit board is damaged
- The connectors are damaged
- The controller chip has failed
- The drive is not recognised
What to do if you lose data on an SSD drive
SSD devices are used by professionals and individuals alike. When stored files are lost, it’s important to carry out a data recovery. How? Software-based recovery may be enough to retrieve deleted documents. However, this method doesn’t always solve the problem.
Your system may prompt you to format the drive. We recommend against accepting this, so as not to reduce your chances of recovering your documents.
When this happens, you need to call on SSD data recovery professionals. At Chronodisk, we have the expertise and skill needed to repair your media. We start by running a diagnosis, then move on to reconstructing the device’s logical layout.
In our dedicated laboratory, we desolder each component of the device to assess the extent of the damage. Only this way can we reconstruct the logical layout between the different chips on your equipment.
At Chronodisk, we handle all types of faults across all interfaces: SAS, SATA, mSATA, NVMe and M.2.
The data recovery process is simple. We invite you to contact us as soon as you notice something unusual with your device. Unlike a magnetic hard drive, an SSD makes no noise when it fails. It’s silent, and you’ll usually only detect a fault when you notice it’s burnt out or unreadable via the read port.
Once you’ve contacted us, we carry out an in-depth assessment of your device. This is free of charge and is followed by a quote. Once you approve it, we proceed with the SSD data recovery.
Recovered files can be transferred onto another drive or sent to you via a high-speed download.
How to reduce the risk of irreversible data loss on SSD drives
People’s first instinct when their drive fails is often to try to repair it themselves. While the intention is understandable, it isn’t necessarily the right solution. In trying to recover the information yourself, you can make the fault worse and damage your media further.
The best approach in this case is to switch off your device and stop using it. This will limit the damage and improve the success rate of the recovery.
Since the fault isn’t mechanical, we also recommend you stop writing anything to the drive. Don’t install anything, and don’t copy files onto the drive that suffered the loss.
