Whether it is a USB key, a hard drive or an SSD, repair is the first step. Often temporary, repair relies on costly hardware solutions generally carried out by specialists.
Bit-by-bit copying of the media’s contents:
This stage relies on either a hardware solution (for example a Deepspar disk imager) or a software solution (for example dd_rescue on Linux). Depending on the media, some options are more effective than others. The aim is to then work on a copy of the media rather than the media itself, so as to put as little strain on it as possible and avoid destroying it for good.
The actual data recovery:
This is a software-based approach. These are typically the best-selling solutions on the market, ranging from simple partition recovery to full data recovery.
