Causes of data loss from Veeam backups

Ransomware poses a serious threat to backup systems, with the ability to encrypt Veeam VBK, VIB and VRB files, as well as the partitions on servers dedicated to backups. When access to the NAS is compromised or incorrectly configured, this malware can also trigger a full system reset, further increasing critical data loss.
Backup files are also vulnerable to hardware failures, such as hard drive faults or RAID system malfunctions. These issues can lead to the deterioration of Veeam VBK, VIB and VRB backup files stored on these devices. The risk of such failures is particularly high during virtual machine restore processes or when synchronising full backups with incremental files. In addition, backup tapes, used as a long-term storage method, are not immune to defects that can compromise data recovery.
Network interruptions or connectivity issues occurring during backup operations can lead to corruption of the backed-up files. Likewise, an incomplete restore can also be the source of file corruption. These incidents compromise data integrity and can make subsequent recovery attempts particularly complex.
Backups are often compromised by human error, including improper configurations, incorrect handling such as overwriting data following a faulty restore, or the accidental deletion of Veeam files. Our success stories

A web hosting provider based in Nantes, specialising in e-commerce solutions for its clients and using OVH infrastructure, contacted us following a ransomware attack. The attack had locked all client data, affecting a Veeam VBK backup file on version 9.5, along with 8 incremental VIB files.

Once the VBK file was downloaded, containing seven virtual machines totalling 750 GB, our team got to work. In under 48 hours, we managed to fully restore all seven VMs, strictly following the priorities set by the client. Thanks to precise synchronisation between the VBK file and the VIBs, we were able to recover the data to the point just before the attack. Six of the Hyper-V VMs were made bootable in VHDX format.

This fast, effective intervention was carried out despite the LUCK ransomware attack, demonstrating our ability to respond with agility and expertise in crisis situations.
A challenging start to the week for one of our clients, who was faced with the destruction of all their backups following a cyberattack. Fortunately, older magnetic tapes, more than a month old, had been preserved, even though they were not up to date.

Faced with this emergency, we took charge of a Synology RS820 server configured in RAID, fitted with two 2 TB Western Digital Ultrastar DC HA210 hard drives. The goal was clear: recover two essential virtual machines, 1 TB each, contained in a Veeam VBK backup file.

With precision and speed, we successfully restored a VBK file dated the day before the attack, ensuring the full recovery of the client’s priority data. This intervention was carried out in the face of the adversity posed by the AKIRA ransomware, demonstrating our ability to restore vital data in extremely critical circumstances.
