After buying out the Japanese company Hitachi to create Hitachi Global Storage Technology, WD is establishing itself as the direct competitor of American Seagate and Korean giant Samsung.
This brand new hard drive now runs on helium, and inaugurates the 3rd generation of hard drives using this technology. Helium, which turns out to be far less dense than air, has the characteristic of slowing friction between the read heads and the platters, which considerably reduces the gap between the two platters, making room for a third one. This process also has the advantage of being less energy-hungry, and Western Digital thus boasts an improved lifespan.
The HGST Ultrastar He10 is compatible with current systems, whether a tower or a server. The only issue is that it will initially only be usable by companies requiring large hosting capacities, and the giant NETFLIX has in fact planned to use it for its platforms.
Nevertheless, individual users should have access to it in the very near future.
In August, the brand offered a model going up to 6 TB, aimed at PC gamers.
